1. And it came to pass, when Jesus had made an end of commanding his twelve disciples, he departed thence to teach and to preach in their cities.

2. Now when John had heard in the prison the works of Christ, he sent two of his disciples,

For Herod had laid hold on John, and bound him, and put him in prison for Herodias' sake, his brother Philip's wife. ;

3. And said unto him, Art thou he that should come, or do we look for another?
Gen 49.10
The sceptre shall not depart from Judah, nor a lawgiver from between his feet, until Shiloh come; and unto him shall the gathering of the people be. ;Num 24.17
I shall see him, but not now: I shall behold him, but not nigh: there shall come a Star out of Jacob, and a Sceptre shall rise out of Israel, and shall smite the corners of Moab, and destroy all the children of Sheth. ;Dan 9.24

Then those men, when they had seen the miracle that Jesus did, said, This is of a truth that prophet that should come into the world. ;

4. Jesus answered and said unto them, Go and shew John again those things which ye do hear and see:

5. The blind receive their sight, and the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, and the deaf hear, the dead are raised up, and the poor have the gospel preached to them.
Isa 29.18
And in that day shall the deaf hear the words of the book, and the eyes of the blind shall see out of obscurity, and out of darkness. ;Isa 35.4-6
Say to them that are of a fearful heart, Be strong, fear not: behold, your God will come with vengeance, even God with a recompence; he will come and save you. ;Isa 42.7
To open the blind eyes, to bring out the prisoners from the prison, and them that sit in darkness out of the prison house. ;Ioan 2.23
Now when he was in Jerusalem at the passover, in the feast day, many believed in his name, when they saw the miracles which he did. ;Ioan 3.2

The Spirit of the Lord GOD is upon me; because the LORD hath anointed me to preach good tidings unto the meek; he hath sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to them that are bound; ;Luc 4.18
The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; he hath sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised, ;Iac 2.5
Hearken, my beloved brethren, Hath not God chosen the poor of this world rich in faith, and heirs of the kingdom which he hath promised to them that love him? ;

6. And blessed is he, whosoever shall not be offended in me.
Isa 8.14-15
And he shall be for a sanctuary; but for a stone of stumbling and for a rock of offence to both the houses of Israel, for a gin and for a snare to the inhabitants of Jerusalem. ;Mat 13.57
And they were offended in him. But Jesus said unto them, A prophet is not without honour, save in his own country, and in his own house. ;Mat 24.10
And then shall many be offended, and shall betray one another, and shall hate one another. ;Mat 26.31
Then saith Jesus unto them, All ye shall be offended because of me this night: for it is written, I will smite the shepherd, and the sheep of the flock shall be scattered abroad. ;Rom 9.32-33
Wherefore? Because they sought it not by faith, but as it were by the works of the law. For they stumbled at that stumblingstone; ;1Cor 1.23
But we preach Christ crucified, unto the Jews a stumblingblock, and unto the Greeks foolishness; ;1Cor 2.14
But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned. ;Gal 5.11
And I, brethren, if I yet preach circumcision, why do I yet suffer persecution? then is the offence of the cross ceased. ;1Pet 2.8
And a stone of stumbling, and a rock of offence, even to them which stumble at the word, being disobedient: whereunto also they were appointed. ;

7. And as they departed, Jesus began to say unto the multitudes concerning John, What went ye out into the wilderness to see? A reed shaken with the wind?
Luc 7.24
And when the messengers of John were departed, he began to speak unto the people concerning John, What went ye out into the wilderness for to see? A reed shaken with the wind? ;Efes 4.14
That we henceforth be no more children, tossed to and fro, and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the sleight of men, and cunning craftiness, whereby they lie in wait to deceive; ;

8. But what went ye out for to see? A man clothed in soft raiment? behold, they that wear soft clothing are in kings' houses.

9. But what went ye out for to see? A prophet? yea, I say unto you, and more than a prophet.
Mat 14.5
And when he would have put him to death, he feared the multitude, because they counted him as a prophet. ;Mat 21.26
But if we shall say, Of men; we fear the people; for all hold John as a prophet. ;Luc 1.76
And thou, child, shalt be called the prophet of the Highest: for thou shalt go before the face of the Lord to prepare his ways; ;Luc 7.26
But what went ye out for to see? A prophet? Yea, I say unto you, and much more than a prophet. ;

10. For this is he, of whom it is written, Behold, I send my messenger before thy face, which shall prepare thy way before thee.
Mal 3.1
Behold, I will send my messenger, and he shall prepare the way before me: and the LORD, whom ye seek, shall suddenly come to his temple, even the messenger of the covenant, whom ye delight in: behold, he shall come, saith the LORD of hosts. ;Marc 1.2
As it is written in the prophets, Behold, I send my messenger before thy face, which shall prepare thy way before thee. ;Luc 1.76
And thou, child, shalt be called the prophet of the Highest: for thou shalt go before the face of the Lord to prepare his ways; ;Luc 7.27
This is he, of whom it is written, Behold, I send my messenger before thy face, which shall prepare thy way before thee. ;
