1. Then came to Jesus scribes and Pharisees, which were of Jerusalem, saying,

Then came together unto him the Pharisees, and certain of the scribes, which came from Jerusalem. ;

2. Why do thy disciples transgress the tradition of the elders? for they wash not their hands when they eat bread.
Marc 7.5
Then the Pharisees and scribes asked him, Why walk not thy disciples according to the tradition of the elders, but eat bread with unwashen hands? ;Col 2.8
Beware lest any man spoil you through philosophy and vain deceit, after the tradition of men, after the rudiments of the world, and not after Christ. ;

3. But he answered and said unto them, Why do ye also transgress the commandment of God by your tradition?

4. For God commanded, saying, Honour thy father and mother: and, He that curseth father or mother, let him die the death.
Ex 20.12
Honor thy father and thy mother: that thy days may be long upon the land which the LORD thy God giveth thee. ;Lev 19.3
Ye shall fear every man his mother, and his father, and keep my sabbaths: I am the LORD your God. ;Deut 5.16
Honor thy father and thy mother, as the LORD thy God hath commanded thee; that thy days may be prolonged, and that it may go well with thee, in the land which the LORD thy God giveth thee. ;Prov 23.22
Hearken unto thy father that begat thee, and despise not thy mother when she is old. ;Efes 6.2
Honour thy father and mother; which is the first commandment with promise; ;Ex 21.17
And he that curseth his father, or his mother, shall surely be put to death. ;Lev 20.9
For every one that curseth his father or his mother shall be surely put to death: he hath cursed his father or his mother; his blood shall be upon him. ;Deut 27.16
Cursed be he that setteth light by his father or his mother. And all the people shall say, Amen. ;Prov 20.20
Whoso curseth his father or his mother, his lamp shall be put out in obscure darkness. ;Prov 30.17
The eye that mocketh at his father, and despiseth to obey his mother, the ravens of the valley shall pick it out, and the young eagles shall eat it. ;

5. But ye say, Whosoever shall say to his father or his mother, It is a gift, by whatsoever thou mightest be profited by me;
Marc 7.11-12
But ye say, If a man shall say to his father or mother, It is Corban, that is to say, a gift, by whatsoever thou mightest be profited by me; he shall be free. ;

6. And honour not his father or his mother, he shall be free. Thus have ye made the commandment of God of none effect by your tradition.

7. Ye hypocrites, well did Esaias prophesy of you, saying,
Marc 7.6
He answered and said unto them, Well hath Esaias prophesied of you hypocrites, as it is written, This people honoureth me with their lips, but their heart is far from me. ;

8. This people draweth nigh unto me with their mouth, and honoureth me with their lips; but their heart is far from me.
Isa 29.13
Wherefore the Lord said, Forasmuch as this people draw near me with their mouth, and with their lips do honour me, but have removed their heart far from me, and their fear toward me is taught by the precept of men: ;Ezec 33.31
And they come unto thee as the people cometh, and they sit before thee as my people, and they hear thy words, but they will not do them: for with their mouth they shew much love, but their heart goeth after their covetousness. ;

9. But in vain they do worship me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men.
Isa 29.13
Wherefore the Lord said, Forasmuch as this people draw near me with their mouth, and with their lips do honour me, but have removed their heart far from me, and their fear toward me is taught by the precept of men: ;Col 2.18-22
Let no man beguile you of your reward in a voluntary humility and worshipping of angels, intruding into those things which he hath not seen, vainly puffed up by his fleshly mind, ;Tit 1.14
Not giving heed to Jewish fables, and commandments of men, that turn from the truth. ;

10. And he called the multitude, and said unto them, Hear, and understand:

And when he had called all the people unto him, he said unto them, Hearken unto me every one of you, and understand: ;
